William Standing, or Fire Bear, was born July 27, 1904, in Oswego, Montana, on the Fort Peck Reservation, the son of Phillip Standing Rattle (Assiniboine) and Patty Jackson (Canadian Sioux). He came from a distinguished tribal lineage going back to Iron Arrow Point of the Stone Band Indians of the American Revolutionary era. In his youth he went to elementary school at the Presbyterian Mission at Wolf Point and later attended Haskell College in Kansas from 1920 to 1924. ...
